Day 9: Oh no...Its Max and Zach

Its the time of year that I look forward to and dread at the same time.

FINALS

I look forward to it because at the end of it, I can begin to function like a normal human being. Sleep more than 3-4 hours a day...having fun..going outside in the daytime...laugh? breathe?? oh no, you're spoiling me.

Studio Finals are usually the same. A lot of Plans, Sections, Elevations, a Model, and a few renderings are needed. I isolate myself from a lot of people, distractions and just keep working and working til D-Day arrives.

However, I had one semester where I worked on a project as a team.

My team member's names were.

Max and Zach

In this semester, we focused on Passive housing systems. The final project involved Modular, Passive housing in an area of Brooklyn, NY, known as Farragut.

We were supposed to have groups of 2 working on a project. But because of the uneven number of people, I was left out...

But Max and Zach were nice enough to let me join them.

Things were fine at first, we got along pretty well. We had so much energy from the start..

We claimed a small space in the studio and named it just for fun.

But we started disagreeing over the name..

It was at this point... a power struggle would begin

I guess design students aren't used to working with others, especially us..We were all pretty headstrong about our own ideas.

For a few weeks we didn't actually get any work done.

Every studio class began with us presenting our ideas,

discussing the ideas

..then yelling at eachother.

Two white guys and an Asian girl yelling at eachother for hours...we were like a bad 80's sitcom.

We made up at the end of each scream fest though.

We came up with so many different ideas and plans...

And each time we all seemed to agree on an idea..something usually didn't work out. Some ideas, didn't get that much sun into the space, the circulation of the building was weird, the ground level didn't work out or we disagreed over a program element.

Finally, I think we only had a few more weeks to complete this project. We needed to come up with an idea and stick with it... fast.

It was literally a rectangular box. It was so simple..but so brilliant...All the problems we had...solved..It made sense to us at the time.

but thinking about all those days..weeks... lost yelling at eachother made me

kinda..

lose it.

We had a few more days to go, and we were getting pretty tense.

Some of us were pretty calm about it...

(Haha, i'm kidding, Zach was awesome, especially with crunching Ecotect numbers)

But in the end, we managed to get everything done...We just didn't sleep for two days..

Despite all the fights and yelling, I didn't hate them, I actually really enjoyed working with them. I learned a lot from them and about them.

...but I couldn't stand to be around them for another semester, so I ran off to Italy in the Spring.

(just kidding)

I still see them. They're both in my 'Tall Building' studio this semester. But we're working on our own projects. (THANK GOD)

We still consult eachother about our projects...just like old times...

(he was just playing around)

Revenge is so sweet. pfft...intern indeed.

This is what we worked on.
