Day 48: When You Watch One Korean Drama, You've Watched Them All.

(In my opinion...of course)

Korean dramas.

You might of heard of them. You might have a Korean friend thats mentioned it to you a couple of times.

For some Koreans...no..maybe...95% of Koreans...
(maybe this is a gross exaggeration, but I do believe this may be true)

love watching Korean dramas.
I knew some people that would never leave their homes for a couple of days just so that they could finish watching them.

I never got into them that much.
Ok, the reason for that..could probably be the language barrier, and that I wouldn't even know what was going on, but still, even when there were shitty subtitles provided, I couldn't really get myself into the story.

I don't remember the names of the drama's that I watched with my friends/family.
There were a good amount of them...

and though they're different from one another, their storylines are pretty much the same.

The basic program of a Korean Drama.
I'm going to make up a Korean Drama, in my head, right now, no editing.
and I won't be surprised..that this kind of story is already a drama.

1) Introduce primary family:

A typical family in a K-Drama, will consist of  a mother, father, son, daughter, and a grandparent or both, that lives with them. Add meddling in-laws into the mix for a bit of comic relief. They are usually a "poor" family, since the audience can relate to them in some aspect. They may be struggling a bit, but they are happy with each other.

2) Introduce secondary family:

They are rich. They have almost everything that money can buy, however they are an unhappy family. The father is the CEO of some trading company while the mother stays at home taking care of the household. They have either a son or daughter that they want them to go study in America or take over the family business.

3) A chance encounter.

It could happen at anytime and in any way. In this example, the daughter of the poor family gets hit by the rich sons car, and when he steps out to help her, this sort of scenario happens. Flower petals start flowing around, it suddenly gets bright, and piano music starts playing.

They fall in love.

4) They meet in secret.

The son visits her at the hospital where she is recovering from various broken limbs. They talk to eachother more as more each day and they soon find out that they are from totally different worlds. The son knows that his mother will never accept the daughter of a poor family. But he doesn't care, he's in love. Unfortunately in the hospital, a sibling, an aunt, or some other family member sees them together, and they blab it to their parents.

5) Confrontation:

Either the family of the rich guy or poor girl, confront them about this relationship. Once they hear about their financial/social status, they are immediately outraged. In this scenario, the boy proclaims his love for this girl, that he'll gladly throw away all of his status just to be with her. He runs out the door to tell her.

Its always usually raining for a more dramatic effect.
While piano music plays in the background, with some guy singing a cheesy, love song.

The poor family, knowing that to be with this boy, would only mean heartbreak, try to gently break it to her that its just not going to work and that its better to marry the next door neighbors son who will soon inherit his families fish market. But everyone knows that the neighbors son is a gambling, cheating gangster.

She runs out the door too, running away to tell her love that she cannot be with him. That it would be best if they ended it. to avoid any more heartbreak.

Somehow, they manage to meet at an intersection and they stare at eachother, the rain pouring. The boy, thinking that she's done the same and thought about running away from home to be with him, is crushed to hear that because of their social statuses, they simply cannot marry.

He cries. The rain pouring down on his face for a more dramatic effect. Just before he turns and runs away, he throws down a small box. Inside is a wedding ring.

The girl, regretting what she's done, is devastated, and runs after him, calling his name.
He doesn't look back.

Suddenly a truck comes out of nowhere, and the girl gets struck by the vehicle. The boy runs back to find her unconscious and yelling at the sky for what he had just done, more rain pouring on his face, the piano music becoming more dramatic.

At the hospital, being told that the girl would never wake up from the coma, the boy agrees to be engaged to a girl that his mother chose for him. Within a year the girl wakes up, and looks for the guy...only to find that he's now engaged.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and the story just goes on..for about another 300 episodes..until they get married.
Its about three hundred episodes because then you get introduced to other family members not worth mentioning and all these other sub plots.

So whatever you do, don't watch Korean Drama's, unless you really, do not have anything better to do.

Otherwise you'll find yourself wanting to find out if they'll end up together..

even though you already know that they will, yet you still watch all 300 episodes to see it happen.

And when you're done, you'll find yourself wanting to watch more..

and more..

and more...
