In 5th grade, I got my first real gig in a play.
It was a comedic version of "Jack in the Beanstalk"
I got the role of a tough talking, golden egg laying chicken.
I remember my teacher wanted me to be more.."gangster?"
My teacher told us to make our own costumes.
So I took out some feathers from a feather duster and stuck it onto a yellow t-shirt with a cat on it.
Martha S, eat yo heart out.
(actually, I think might gouge her eyes out)
I wasn't sure how I felt about being the golden chicken, I think at the time I was rather offended at the time. I mean, who wants to be a gangster chicken.

But I think in some ways, playing this part helped me come out of my shell a little.
I was a really shy girl and thinking about it now, I'm surprised I agreed to it...
or maybe my teacher told me to stop being such a pansy and deal with it.
she was rather scary. Only she would make us do a play like this...
It was nice to hear people laugh at what I do. I wasn't used to it, but it made me feel really good about myself. The part that got them to laugh the most was..
I passionately gripped my shirt, tore out my feathers, and flung them into the air.
I tell ya, it was Oscar material.
When the play was over, the cast went out on the stage (which was inside our chapel) one by one. I got my first (and only) standing ovation.
Later on, my teacher wanted to do a play about the civil rights movement.
I was asked to play Rosa Parks...
(an Asian Rosa Parks speaking in a ghetto voice...I don't think thats how it really happened...)
Even though it happened so long ago, I still remember how it made me feel.
Its affected my life in a very positive way.
I learned that if I didn't try something that was outside my comfort zone, I could miss a great opportunity.
And in this case, I discovered something that makes me happy.
making others laugh and making them happy.
