Day 43: Why My Parents Insisted I Go to Med or Law School: My First Portfolio

In my room, underneath my desk.

Is a bookshelf.

Over the years, its become a sort of time capsule, with me stuffing old books and notebooks down there.

This time, in an effort to change my cleaning habits, I took out everything from the bookshelf.

from there, I found a old book, with a floral looking pattern..

and when I looked inside it.

my stomach did a  backflip

I was stunned.
..It really was my first 'portfolio'

looking through it, I was crying from laughter and horrified at the same time.
maybe there was a reason why I shoved it into the time capsule bookshelf.

I tried to remember how old I was when I made this and how did I even know about the word "portfolio". I think it was because of my uncle, who, upon hearing me tell him that I wanted to be an artist when I grew up, told me that I had better keep a portfolio.

That way I could show how good, no, GREAT.. I was.

Maybe he told me this out of pity or amusement.

Anyway, I was very enthusiastic about this endeavor. I would fill up this book with drawings of every single animal from my "Encyclopedia of Animals" that I had at the time.

Lets start with the first page.

This book used to belong to my mother, I think I either took it or she gave it to me.
I have no idea what it says.

I think this is a picture of my "special dog" Dino (Click here for details!)
Which tells me...I was either in Kindergarten or 1st grade when I made this.

Three legged flamingo

I'm guessing this is a alligator..or crocodile..dinosaur..
a lot of my drawings of flowers were like that for some reason.

I don't know how I got this when I was drawing an octopus..
I guess thats what they look like to a young mind.

Then I think I wanted to be more organized with my endeavor, so I  decided to draw animals by category.
Don't ask me why I drew a clam with a flower on it for the "Dog" section.
Portrait of my second dog, Shadow.
The German Shepard...

At this point, I don't understand why I only drew two dogs.
Maybe I got sick of it or that I really wanted to draw bible scenes instead.
I probably wanted to give up on that or something, seeing as how I did a poor job at erasing this page.

I think that actually say's Jose...maybe I was copying a Spanish Drawing of Jesus or something.
this was the only bible related thing I drew

Since my drawing of Spanish Jesus was so good,
I probably thought that I was the shit and that I could now move on to drawing architecture.
I first drawing my school..except I spelled 'Staten Island' and 'Lutheren' wrong.

I'm sorry if you are French or Chinese or both.
I didn't mean to insult your architecture with my hideous drawings.

I don't know why I decided to draw a crown for London instead of a building.

At this point, I probably started to feel bad about giving up on my "Draw every animal in my encyclopedia" project.
So I took it up again

Momentary relapse...apparently decided to draw diamonds in space.

Knowing me, I probably gave up on drawing animals again
and decided to draw flowers instead...

I probably thought that I was so badass at drawing flowers that I could now replicate famous paintings.
I think I was rather disappointed with how my drawing came out..
...
..
.

so I decided to draw Winnie the Pooh instead.

And that was the last drawing in my portfolio.

Looking back on it now, it shows how even back then, I didn't finish what I started,

I don't know what my excuse was back then..

but I don't plan on repeating the past

; )

  1. Awww, it's charming and cute. I like it. You shouldn't pick on yourself. It was well done and very age appropriate. (Now, if your portfolio had shown other things - scary things - then we might have to worry.)

Pretty impressive, actually for a little kid.
